Foreword
This Standard was replaced by GB/T 8140-1987 Bleached Lac.
Compared with GB/T 8140-1987, the major changes of this Standard are as follows.
--- Add the Normative References;
--- Delete the requirements of mandatory test, optional test and note in technical
requirements;
--- Adde four indicators and requirements of heat hardening time (thermal life), lead, arsenic
and rosin;
--- Delete inorganic acid, and two indicators of free chlorine and peroxide;
--- Adjust the requirements of color index, hot ethanol insoluble matter, volatile matter
(moisture), chlorine content, acid value and other indicators;
--- Add the Clause 5 “Sampling”;
--- Add the provisions of inspection classification and inspection items in the inspection
rules;
--- Add the requirements of ambient temperature for storage and transportation.
This Standard was proposed by State Administration of Forestry.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of Institute of Chemical Industry of Forest
Products, Chinese Academy of Forestry.

Bleached Shellac
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the technical requirements, sampling, test methods, inspection rules, as
well as marking, packaging, storage and transportation of bleached shellac.
This Standard applies to light-colored shellac products obtained by chemical bleaching of
shellac resin.
2 Normative References
The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this Standard through
reference in this Standard. For dated references, the subsequent amendments (excluding
corrigendum) or revisions do not apply to this Standard, however, parties who reach an
agreement based on this Standard are encouraged to study if the latest versions of these
documents are applicable. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document
applies.

3 Terms and Definitions
For the purposes of this Standard, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1 Bleached shellac
Use original shellac or granular shellac as raw material; dissolve it in sodium carbonate solution
or other weak alkaline solution; remove impurities or shellac wax; and bleach it with bleach to
make light-colored shellac.
3.2 Bleached lac
The bleached shellac that contains wax.
7 Inspection Rules
7.1 Classification of inspection
The product inspection is divided into exit-factory inspection and type inspection.
7.2 Inspection items
7.2.1 Exit-factory inspection. color indicator, hot ethanol insoluble matter, volatile matter
(moisture), waxy, and chlorine content.
7.2.2 Type inspection. all items listed in Table 1.
7.2.3 Type inspection shall be carried out in any of the following situations.
a) During normal production, type inspection shall be carried out at least once a month;
b) When there are major changes in raw materials, auxiliary materials and production
processes;
c) When production is resumed after a long-term shutdown;
d) When the quality supervision agency proposes a type inspection requirement.
7.3 Batching rules
Products of the same production batch form one batch.
7.4 Judgment and reinspection rules
7.4.1 The quality department of the manufacturer shall inspect. Each batch of bleached shellac
left the factory shall meet the requirements of this Standard. The mandatory indicators shall be
inspected once within 2 months, and a quality certificate in a certain format shall be attached.
7.4.2 If any indicator in the inspection result does not meet the requirements of this Standard,
re-sampling shall be taken from twice specimens and the unqualified index shall be re-tested.
If it still does not meet the requirements, the product is unqualified.
7.4.3 If the supplier and the purchaser have any disputes over the inspection results, they shall
be raised within 3 months after arrival. Both parties can jointly take 3 samples according to the
sampling method cited in this Standard; keep one portion each; and entrust the other portion to
the inspection department with corresponding qualifications for arbitration analysis.
