This Standard was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This Standard replaces GB 18408-2001 Photometric characteristics of devices
for the illumination of rear registration plates of motor vehicles and their trailers.
Compared with GB 18408-2001, the main changes are as follows.
- modified Clause 2 “Normative references” of the previous edition;

Photometric characteristics of devices for the

vehicles and their trailers
1 Scope
This Standard specifies general requirements, light source requirements, light
color requirements, photometric characteristics as well as its test methods and
inspection rules of devices for the illumination of rear registration plates of motor
vehicles and their trailers.
This Standard is applicable to devices for the illumination of rear registration
plates of motor vehicles and their trailers.
2 Normative references

requirements
ECE R37 Uniform provides concerning the approval of filament lamps for
use in approved lamp units of power-driven vehicles and of their trailers
3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB 4785
and GB 15766.1 apply.
4 Classification and different forms of illumination
accuracy is not less than grade 0.2. The luminance meter should be grade one
specified in national test procedures (the indication error does not exceed 0.25).
6.1.3 The brightness measurements shall be performed on an achromatic
diffuse surface 1) of well-known diffuse reflection factor. Luminance value for
test shall be corrected according to the diffuse reflectance of 1. When
achromatic diffuse surface dimensions are same with registration plate
dimensions or exceed the dimensions of any test point area, its center should
be placed at the central position of measurement point.
6.1.4 Colorless diffuse surface shall be mounted at the normal position of
registration plate and the position 2 mm before fixing plate.
6.1.5 Brightness measurement shall be vertical to colorless diffuse surface.
The deviation on each direction is ≤ 5°. Each measurement point (as shown in
Figure 1) is represented by round range of which the diameter is 25 mm.
6.2 Photometric test
6.2.1 Filament bulb’s lighting test shall use standard bulb. It shall be
measured under reference luminous flux.
6.2.2 If it is the light source module, it shall respectively use 6.75 V, 13.5 V or
28.0 V to measure.
6.2.3 If the light source is supplied through a special power supply device.
The aforementioned test voltage shall use the input voltage of power supply
device terminals.
6.2.4 In addition to the devices for the illumination of registration plate with
filament bulb, for other devices for the illumination of registration plate, the
measurement values of brightness after lighting for 1 min and 30 min shall
comply with the provisions of minimum value.
6.2.5 The brightness value of each measurement point after lighting for 1 min
can be calculated through the brightness ratio of any point after lighting for 1
min and 30 min.
6.2.6 Photometric measurement of multi-light-source device
a) non-replaceable light source (filament bulb and others) are performed in
accordance with the provisions of 6.2.2 and 6.2.3;
b) for device of replaceable filament bulb, if it is measured under 6.75 V,
13.5 V or 28.0 V, the brightness value should be corrected. The
correction factor is the ratio between reference luminous flux and the
average luminous flux under test voltage (6.75 V, 13.5 V or 28.0 V). The
deviation between the actual flux of each bulb and the average value
shall not exceed 5%; or use standard bulb on each light source position.
Test under the reference luminous flux. Add the measurement value of
each position together.
6.3 Light color test
Supply the power to the device according to the provisions of 6.2.1 to 6.2.3.
Observe the color change of rear registration plate.
7 Inspection rules
7.1 Type test
7.1.1 It shall indicate the registration plate of which this illumination device is
applicable to category 1, 2 or 3. It shall indicate the spatial relation between the

1 Scope
This Standard specifies general requirements, light source requirements, light

inspection rules of devices for the illumination of rear registration plates of motor
vehicles and their trailers.

plates of motor vehicles and their trailers.

4 Classification and different forms of illumination

6.2 Photometric test
6.2.1 Filament bulb’s lighting test shall use standard bulb. It shall be
measured under reference luminous flux.
6.2.2 If it is the light source module, it shall respectively use 6.75 V, 13.5 V or
28.0 V to measure.
6.2.3 If the light source is supplied through a special power supply device.
The aforementioned test voltage shall use the input voltage of power supply
device terminals.
6.2.4 In addition to the devices for the illumination of registration plate with
filament bulb, for other devices for the illumination of registration plate, the
measurement values of brightness after lighting for 1 min and 30 min shall
comply with the provisions of minimum value.
6.2.5 The brightness value of each measurement point after lighting for 1 min
can be calculated through the brightness ratio of any point after lighting for 1
min and 30 min.
6.2.6 Photometric measurement of multi-light-source device
a) non-replaceable light source (filament bulb and others) are performed in
accordance with the provisions of 6.2.2 and 6.2.3;
b) for device of replaceable filament bulb, if it is measured under 6.75 V,
13.5 V or 28.0 V, the brightness value should be corrected. The

average luminous flux under test voltage (6.75 V, 13.5 V or 28.0 V). The
deviation between the actual flux of each bulb and the average value
shall not exceed 5%; or use standard bulb on each light source position.

6.3 Light color test
Supply the power to the device according to the provisions of 6.2.1 to 6.2.3.
Observe the color change of rear registration plate.
7 Inspection rules
7.1 Type test
7.1.1 It shall indicate the registration plate of which this illumination device is
