Purificatory Performance of Coatings with Air Purification
1 Scope
This Document specifies the classification and marking, requirements, test methods, result
calculations, test reports and inspection rules of indoor air purification coatings.
This Document applies to indoor air purification coatings.
2 Normative References
The provisions in following documents become the essential provisions of this Document
through reference in this Document. For the dated documents, only the versions with the dates
indicated are applicable to this Document; for the undated documents, only the latest version
(including all the amendments) is applicable to this Document.
GB/T 3186 Paints Varnishes and Raw Materials for Paints and Varnishes - Sampling
GB/T 9271 Paints and Varnishes Standard Panels for Testing
GB/T 16129 Standard Method for Hygienic Examination of Formaldehyde In Air of
Residential Areas - Spectrophotometric Method
GB/T 18883 Indoor Air Quality Standard
3 Terms and Definitions
For the purposes of this Document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1 Air purification
The behavior of reducing the target pollutants in indoor air that affect human health and making
the air clean.
3.2 Air purification coating
The coating that can reduce or remove one or more targeted pollutants from indoor air.
3.3 Purificatory efficiency
Under the specified test conditions, the ability of the coating to reduce the concentration of
formaldehyde (or toluene) in the cabin.
3.4 Purification durability
Under the specified test conditions, after the indoor air purification coating is applied several
times with the specified concentration of formaldehyde (or toluene) within the specified period
(or time), the ability of the material’s continuous purification against the target pollutant.
4 Classification and Marking
4.1 Classification
4.1.1 Products are divided into interior decoration (Class I) and treatment (Class II) according
to their uses; Class I is further divided into water-based liquid coatings (IS) and powder
inorganic coatings (IF)according to the coating form.
4.1.2 According to the principle of purification, the products are divided into coatings with non-
photocatalytic air purification function (Class W) and coatings with photocatalytic air
purification function (Class G).
4.2 Marking
Products shall be marked in order of product name, document number, coating category, and
purification principle.
EXAMPLE: water-based liquid coatings of interior decoration with non-photocatalytic air purification
function shall be marked as follows:
JC/T 1074-2021-IS-W
5 Requirements
The indoor air purification coatings should meet the requirements in Table 1 for the purificatory
performance against certain target pollutants.
6.2.3 Micro-syringe: Volume range 5μL, division value 0.1μL.
6.2.4 Pollution source reagents: 37%~40% formaldehyde solution (analytical pure); toluene
(analytical pure).
6.3 Gas collection and analysis
6.3.1 The collection and concentration analysis of formaldehyde gas shall be carried out in
accordance with the methods specified in GB/T 16129.
6.3.2 The collection and concentration analysis of toluene gas shall be carried out according to
the method specified in GB/T 18883.
6.4 Sampling
The product shall be sampled according to the method stipulated in GB/T 3186, and the
sampling volume shall be determined according to the test requirements.
6.5 Test substrate
Use a glass plate with a size of 500 mm × 500 mm, and its surface treatment shall be carried
out in accordance with the method specified in GB/T 9271.
6.6 Preparation of test sample plate
6.6.1 For Class IS materials, after stirring the product evenly, according to the coating amount
provided by the manufacturer, evenly and fully coat the sample on one side of the four glass
plates; and carry out the test after natural drying for 7 days in the laboratory environment in
6.1.1. If the manufacturer does not provide the coating amount, the total coating amount of
Class IS materials should be (250 ± 2) g/m2.
6.6.2 For Class IF materials, prepare samples according to the requirements of the product
instructions. If the tested product specifies the range of powder to water ratio, the middle value
shall be taken. According to the coating amount provided by the manufacturer, evenly and fully
coat the sample on one side of the four glass plates, and conduct the test after 7 days of natural
drying in the laboratory environment in 6.1.1. If the manufacturer does not provide the coating
amount, the total coating amount (dry powder material) of Class IF materials should be (1.6±0.1)
kg/m2.
6.6.3 For Class II materials, after stirring the product evenly, spray the sample evenly on one
side of the four glass plates according to the spraying amount provided by the manufacturer,
and conduct the test after drying it naturally for 24 hours in the laboratory environment in 6.1.1.
If the manufacturer does not provide the spraying amount, the spraying amount of Class II
materials should be (60 ± 2) g/m2.
6.7 Purificatory efficiency
6.7.1 See Appendix B for the test method of purificatory efficiency of coatings with non-
photocatalytic air purification.
6.7.2 See Appendix C for the test method of the purificatory efficiency of coatings with
photocatalytic air purification.
6.8 Purification durability
6.8.1 See Appendix B for the test method of purification durability of coatings with non-
photocatalytic air purification.
6.8.2 See Appendix C for the test method of purification durability of coatings with
photocatalytic air purification.
7 Calculation of Results
7.1.1 See Appendix B for the calculation of the purificatory efficiency and purification
durability of coatings with non-photocatalytic air purification.
7.1.2 See Appendix C for the calculation of the purificatory efficiency and purification
durability of coatings with photocatalytic air purification.
