Foreword
All technical contents of this part of GB 5768 are mandatory.
GB 5768 "Road Traffic Signs and Markings" is divided into eight parts:
- Part 1: General
- Part 2: Road traffic signs
- Part 3: Road traffic markings
- Part 4: Work zone
- Part 5: Speed limit
- Part 6: Highway railway grade crossing
- Part 7: Non-motor vehicles and pedestrians
- Part 8: School zone
This part is the first part of GB 5768.
This part replaces the general provisions of GB 5768-1999 "Road Traffic Signs
and Markings", the corresponding parts and the No. 1 Amendment in 1999 and
the No. 2 Amendment in 2005. Compared with the corresponding parts of GB
5768-1999 and the amendments, the main changes in this part are as follows:
- ADD the Appendix A (normative) "Applications of road traffic signs and
markings other than those specified in GB 5768";
- ADD the Appendix B (normative) "Basic graphics of road traffic signs and
markings";
- ADD the principles of the use of road traffic signs and markings (see
Chapter 3).
Appendix A and Appendix B of this part are normative appendixes.
From the date of implementation, the newly established (reset) traffic signs and
markings shall be implemented in accordance with the new rules. Traffic signs
and markings that have been set up according to the old standards shall be
gradually replaced during their service life.
This part was proposed by the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of
China and Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China.
Road traffic signs and markings - Part 1: General
1 Scope
This part of GB 5768 specifies the principles and general provisions for road
traffic signs and markings.
This part applies to roads, urban roads and places where social vehicles are
allowed to pass through under the jurisdiction of an organization, including
traffic signs and markings on various types of roads such as plazas, public
parking lots, etc. for public passage. Traffic signs and markings set in other
places where motor vehicles pass, parking lots, etc. may make reference to this
part.
2 Normative references
The provisions in following documents become the provisions of this part
through reference in this part of GB 5768. For the dated references, the
subsequent amendments (excluding corrections) or revisions do not apply to
this part; however, parties who reach an agreement based on this part are
encouraged to study if the latest versions of these documents are applicable.
For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document applies.

3 Principles
3.1 Road traffic signs and markings shall convey clear, defined and concise
information, to attract the attention of road users and to allow for sufficient
discovery, reading and reaction time.
3.2 Road traffic signs and markings shall not convey information that is not
related to road traffic, such as advertising information.
3.3 The information as transmitted by the road traffic signs and markings shall

Applications of road traffic signs and markings other than those
specified in GB 5768
In practical applications, if it needs to use road traffic signs and markings other
than those specified in GB 5768 (all parts), it shall comply with the following
procedures:
a) The proposing party shall register the study application to the National
Traffic Engineering Facilities (Highway) Standardization Technical
Committee (hereinafter referred to as the Standardization Committee).
The report shall describe the need for special use, the new signs and/or
the necessity of the marking study, the study methods, etc.; promise that
the study results are not protected by patents or intellectual property rights.
b) Maintain necessary links with the Standardization Committee during the
study process, so that the Standardization Committee can understand the
progress and situation of the study.
c) After the completion of the study, the study results will be reported to the
Standardization Committee in the form of a research report. The study
report contains the following: the background, the study process and
conclusions of the new signs and markings; as well as the retention of test
study yard within a certain period of time after the registration of study
report.
d) The Standardization Committee will review the results of the study and
conduct field visits to the test site as needed.
e) The Standardization Committee informs the proposing party whether it can
be tried in a certain area based on the results of the review.
f) If it is available for trial use, the Standardization Commission will notify a
number of regions to try out new signs and/or markings and request the
trial parties to provide a trial evaluation.
g) According to the trial evaluation, the Standardization Committee decides
whether the new signs and/or the markings are included in the
amendment of the article. If it is included in the amendment, carry out the
procedure for the modification of the standard provisions.
