Foreword
This Standard is drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This Standard replaces GB/T 10086-1988 “Terminology and symbols for
cylindrical worm and wormwheel”.
As compared with GB/T 10086-1988, the main changes of this Standard are as
follows.
- CHANGE the standard’s name to “Symbols for cylindrical worm and
wormwheel”;
- ADD the “Foreword” of the standard;
- DELETE the content concerning the “requirements” in the scope of the
former standard (SEE Clause 1; Clause 1 of the 1988 edition);
- REFER to the latest edition of the relevant standards (SEE Clause 2;
Clause 2 of the 1988 edition);
- ADD “Combination rules for basic symbols” (SEE Clause 3);
- LIST the basic symbols in tabular form (SEE Clause 3; Clause 3 of the 1988
edition);
- DELETE the contents concerning terms (SEE Clauses 4, 5, and 6 of the
1988 edition).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document
may be the subject of patent rights. The issuing authority of this document shall

This Standard specifies the symbols for cylindrical worm and wormwheel.
This Standard is applicable to the cylindrical worm gearing with a shaft angle
∑=90°, and its worm and wormwheel.

3 Basic symbols for worm and wormwheel
3.1 Combination rules for basic symbols
The basic symbols for worm and wormwheel follow the requirements of 2.1 of
GB/T 2821-2003. The main rules are as follows.
a) The symbol consists of a main symbol or a main symbol plus one or more
subscripts or a superscript;
b) The main symbol can be a separate uppercase or lowercase letter. The
letters shall be italic Roman or Greek letters;
c) The subscript shall be a Roman letter or an Arabic numeral or a
combination of both;
d) All subscripts shall be marked on the same line and lower than the main
symbol;
e) Symbols with lines drawn (drawn above or below), superscripts other than
indices, pre-subscripts, pre-superscripts, secondary subscripts,
secondary superscripts, and dashes shall be avoided.
