Foreword
This standard modifies and adopts ISO/CD 7268.1996 “Pipework components
- Definition and selection of PN”.
The local differences between this standard and ISO/CD 7268.1996 are as
follows.
- At the end of clause 3, ADD that “note. it is allowed to select other PN values
if necessary”.
This standard is a revision of GB/T 1048-1990 “Nominal pressure for pipe
components”. The main changes are as follows.
- CHANGE the standard name;
- MODIFY the definition of PN (nominal pressure) in accordance with ISO/CD
7268.1996 and BS EN 1333.1997 “Pipework components - Definition and
selection of PN”;
- DELETE the marking method of the nominal pressure in the original
standard, DELETE the unit of PN value (MPa), CLARIFY the basic concept
that PN (nominal pressure) is only “the marking of the combination of letter
and number for reference purposes which is related to the mechanical
properties of the piping system components”, further DESCRIBE that the
number followed the letter PN does not represent the measured value and
cannot be used for calculation purposes.
- MODIFY the representation of the nominal pressure series, such as PN 4.0
MPa in the original standard, which is now marked as. PN40; SIMPLIFY the
value of the PN series, that is, deleting the non-commonly used nominal
pressure values which are not included in the original standard ISO/CD
7268.1996, such as PN0.05, PN0.1, PN0.4, PN28.0, PN335.0 (MPa), etc.
This standard replaces GB/T 1048-1990.
This standard was proposed by the China Machinery Industry Federation.
This standard shall be under the jurisdiction of the National Pipeline
Standardization Technical Committee.

Pipework components - Definition and selection of PN
1 Scope
This standard specifies the definition and series of PN (nominal pressure).
This standard applies to pipework components as specified in the relevant
standards which use the PN marking.
2 Definition
PN. Marking of the combination of letters and numbers used for reference in
relation to the mechanical properties and dimensional characteristics of piping
system components. It consists of the letter PN followed by a dimensionless
number.
Note 1. The number followed by the letter PN does not represent the measured
value and cannot be used for calculation purposes, unless otherwise specified
in the relevant standards.
Note 2. The term PN has no meaning except to be related to the relevant pipe
component standard.
Note 3. The allowable pressure of the pipework element depends on the PN
value of the component, the material and design, the allowable operating
temperature, etc. The allowable pressure is given in the pressure-temperature
rating table of corresponding standard.
Note 4. All pipework components with the same PN and DN values shall have
the same mating dimensions as the matching flange.
