Foreword
This Standard is drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This Standard replaces GB/T 14097-1999 “Noise limits for small and medium
power diesel engines” and GB/T 15739-1995 “Noise limitation of small gasoline
engine”.
As compared with GB/T 14097-1999 and GB/T 15739-1995, the main technical
changes of this Standard are as follows.
- MODIFY the scope of application of the standard;
- ADD terms and definitions;
- MODIFY the measurement methods of emitted noise, and SUPPLEMENT
the treatment regulations for specific sound source noises and the
operating conditions of engine;
- GIVE the formula for limit values of emitted noise, and ADD engine noise
grade regulations and its assessment method;
- ADD the identification of engine noise grade.
This Standard was proposed by China Machinery Industry Federation.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of National Technical Committee
177 on IC Engines Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC 177).

Reciprocating internal combustion engines -
Limit values of emitted noise
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the sound power level limit values of emitted noise of 4
grades for reciprocating internal combustion engines.
This Standard applies to the reciprocating internal combustion engine defined
in GB/T 21404 (unless otherwise specified, hereinafter known as “engine” for
short).
2 Normative references
The following documents are indispensable for the application of this document.
For the dated references, only the versions with the dates indicated are
applicable to this document. For the undated references, the latest version
(including all the amendments) are applicable to this document.

sound power level using sound pressure - Part 1. Engineering method
GB/T 1859.3 Reciprocating internal combustion engines - Measurement of
sound power level using sound pressure - Part 3. Precision methods for
hemi-anechoic rooms

3 Terms and definitions
The terms and definitions defined in GB/T 1859.1, GB/T 1859.3, and GB/T
21404 and the following are applicable to this document.
3.1 Engine noise grade
A division based on the engine noise level.
3.2 Engine noise grade 1; ENG1
The engine whose sound power level measured values for all operating
conditions are less than or equal to its corresponding Grade 1 sound power
level limit values.
3.3 Engine noise grade 2; ENG2
The engine whose sound power level measured values for all operating
conditions are less than or equal to its corresponding Grade 2 sound power
level limit values, and whose sound power level measured value for at least 1
operating condition is greater than its corresponding Grade 1 sound power level
limit value.
3.4 Engine noise grade 3; ENG3
The engine whose sound power level measured values for all operating
conditions are less than or equal to its corresponding Grade 3 sound power
level limit values, and whose sound power level measured value for at least 1
operating condition is greater than its corresponding Grade 2 sound power level
limit value.
3.5 Engine noise grade 4; ENG4
The engine whose sound power level measured value for at least 1 operating
condition is greater than its corresponding Grade 3 sound power level limit
value.
4 Measurement methods
4.1 General
The engine noise measurement shall be carried out in accordance with the
provisions of GB/T 1859.3 preferentially, or may be carried out in accordance
with the provisions of GB/T 1859.1.
Note. The measurement uncertainty specified in GB/T 1859.3 is smaller than that specified
in GB/T 1859.1, but the working condition and operating conditions of engine are
exactly the same.
4.2 Acoustic treatment of specific sound sources
The acoustic treatment of specific sound sources such as engine inlet noise,
exhaust noise, and cooling fan or blower noise shall be in accordance with the
provisions of Table 1.
