Determination of Resistance to Water of Films
1 Thematic Content and Applicable Scope
This Standard specifies the methods for determining the water resistance of paint films,
including two methods: the water immersion test method and the immersion in boiling
water test method. After reaching the specified test time, the water resistance of the
paint film is expressed by the phenomenon of the surface change of the paint film.
2 Normative References
GB 1727 General Preparation of Paint Film
GB 1764 Method for Determining the Thickness of Paint Film
GB 3186 Sampling Paint Products
GB 6682 Water for Analytical Laboratory Use - Specification
3 Materials and Equipment
3.1 Underplate: The underplate shall be flat and free of distortion; and the plate surface
shall be free of any visible cracks and wrinkles. Unless otherwise specified, the
underplate shall be tinplate with a size of 120mm×25mm×0.2~0.3 mm.
3.2 Distilled water or deionized water meets the requirements of the Class-III water
specified in GB 6682.
3.3 Glass water tank.
4 Sampling
Unless otherwise specified, it shall be carried out in accordance with the provisions of
GB 3186.
5 Processing and Painting of the Underplate
Unless otherwise specified, prepare paint film on three tinplate (3.1) according to the
the product standard.
9.2 Method-B: Immersion in boiling water test method
9.2.1 Immersion of test panels
Add distilled water or deionized water (3.2) to the glass water tank (3.3). Unless
otherwise specified, keep the water (3.2) in a boiling state until the end of the test.
Put three test panels into it, and immerse 2/3 of the length of each test panel in water.
9.2.2 Inspection of test panel
Check and evaluate the test panel in accordance with the provisions of 9.1.2 specified
in Method-A.
10 Test Report
The test report shall include the following:
a. The model and name of the tested product;
b. Explain the use of this national standard (GB/T 1733) and which method (Method-
A or Method-B);
c. Any difference from the content specified in this national standard;
d. Test results (detailed records of paint film damage and evaluation results);
e. Test date.
