Foreword
This Standard equivalently adopted ISO 8493:1998 (E) Metallic Materials – Tube – Drift-
Expanding Test.
This Standard equivalently translated ISO 8493:1998 (E) Metallic Materials – Tube – Drift-
Expanding Test.
This Standard made the following editorial modifications:
a) Change “this International Standard” into “this Standard”;
b) Use decimal point “.” to replace comma “,” which is used as the decimal point;
c) Delete the Foreword of the international standard; and add the Foreword of this Standard;
d) Change the Clause 7 a) “Refer to this International Standard, e.g., ISO 8493” of the
original standard into “this Standard number”;
e) Supplement the calculation formula of drift-expanding rate in the form of additional
information after Subclause 6.2 of Clause 6.
This Standard replaced GB/T 242-1997 Metallic Materials – Tube – Drift Expanding Test.
1) Supplement the Scope;
2) Reregulate the requirements for specimen;
3) Provide more detailed information on test procedures and test conditions.
This Standard was proposed by China Iron and Steel Association.
This Standard shall be under the jurisdiction of National Technical Committee on Steel of
Standardization Administration of China.
Drafting organizations of this Standard: Tianjin Pipe (Group) Corporation Limited; China
Metallurgical Information and Standardization Institute; and Pangang Group Chengdu Iron and
Steel Co., Ltd.
Chief drafting staffs of this Standard: Su Yingqun, Sun Yu, Dong Li, and Zhang Xinrong.
The historical editions replaced by this Standard are as follows:
--- GB 242-1963, GB 242-1982, GB/T 242-1997.
Metal Materials – Tube – Drift-Expanding Test
1 Scope
This Standard specifies a method for determining the ability of metallic tubes of circular cross-
section to undergo plastic deformation in drift expansion.
This Standard is intended for tubes having an outside diameter no greater than 150 mm (100
mm for light metals) and a thickness no greater than 10 mm although the range of the outside
diameter or the thickness for which this Standard is applicable may be more exactly specified
in the relevant product standard.
2 Symbols, Designations and Units
Symbols, designations and units for the drift-expanding test of tubes are given in Table 1 and
are shown in Figure 1.
