Limits and Measurement Methods for Non-road Diesel
Engine Specific Fuel Consumption
1 Scope
This Standard specifies the limits and measurement methods for non-road diesel
engine weighted specific fuel consumption.
This Standard is applicable to non-road diesel engines whose rated power is not
greater than 560 kW (hereinafter referred to as diesel engines); the used fuel is light
diesel oil, excluding marine diesel engines that use heavy oil.
2 Normative References
The following documents are indispensable to the application of this document. In
terms of references with a specified date, only versions with a specified date are
applicable to this document. In terms of references without a specified date, the latest
version (including all the modifications) is applicable to this document.
GB 20891-2014 Limits and Measurement Methods for Exhaust Pollutants from Diesel
Engines of Non-road Mobile Machinery (China III, IV)
GB/T 21404-2008 Internal Combustion Engine - Determination and Method for the
Measurement of Engine Power - General Requirements
3 Terms and Definitions
What is defined in GB/T 21404 and GB 20891, and the following terms and definitions
are applicable to this document.
3.1 Non-road Diesel Engine
Non-road diesel engine refers to diesel engine for land use (except for road vehicles
and three-wheeled vehicles), marine, agricultural and forestry tractors, agricultural
machinery, construction machinery, generator sets and water pump sets, etc.
3.2 Weighted Specific Fuel Consumption
Weighted specific fuel consumption refers to the ratio of the cumulative sum of the
measured hourly fuel consumption of each operating condition respectively multiplied
by its corresponding weighting coefficient to the cumulative sum of the power of each
operating condition respectively multiplied by its corresponding weighting coefficient
value 42,700 kJ/kg, expressed in [g(kwh)];
gewf---specific fuel consumption obtained during the measurement, expressed in
[g(kwh)];
Huf---the low calorific value of fuel used in the measurement, expressed in (kJ/kg);
Hub---reference low calorific value of fuel, namely, 42,700 kJ/kg.
6 Diesel Engine Lineage and Source Engine
The definition of diesel engine lineage and source engine is shown in 3.8 and 3.9 of
GB 20891-2014. The determination of parameters of diesel engine lineage and source
engine selection are respectively shown in Chapter 8 and Chapter 9 of GB 20891-2014.
7 Limits of Weighted Specific Fuel Consumption
In accordance with the rated power, the limits of weighted specific fuel consumption of
diesel engine are divided into 10 gears. The manufacturer may choose to limit the
diesel engine lineage to one power gear and verify the weighted specific fuel
consumption of the power gear of diesel engine lineage. In the same lineage, it is
allowed to select a representative model as the source engine for measurement and
assessment.
The limits of non-road diesel engine weighted specific fuel consumption are shown in
Table 1. The limits of air-cooled diesel engine and condensing diesel engine are
allowed to increase by 4%. Before the measurement of the specific fuel consumption,
the diesel engine is allowed to run-in in accordance with the manufacturer’s regulations.
All limits are the limits under the standard reference conditions specified in Chapter 5
of GB/T 21404-2008. During the measurement of non-road diesel engine rated power
(total power), the equipment and auxiliary devices that shall be installed shall comply
with the stipulations of Appendix A.
8.1.5 In accordance with the purpose of diesel engine, determine the applicable test
cycle. In addition, in accordance with the rated power, rated speed, maximum torque
and the speed of the diesel engine, determine the power, torque and speed of each
operating condition in the corresponding test cycle.
8.1.6 After the operating condition of each test cycle reaches the steady state specified
by the manufacturer, measure the power / torque, speed, specific fuel consumption per
hour and intake air temperature at least twice. In addition, take the average value as
the measured value of the operating condition; the torque does not exceed ±2% of the
maximum torque at the test speed; the speed does not exceed 1% or ± 10 r/min; the
difference between the two measured values of specific fuel consumption per hour
does not exceed 2%.
8.1.7 The fuel used for the test is consistent with the fuel used for the four-stage
emission measurement specified in the currently valid GB 20891-2014. If it is another
designation (calorific value) of diesel, in accordance with Formula (2), convert the
weighted specific fuel consumption. The engine oil used for the test is the engine oil
specified by the diesel engine manufacturer and is indicated in the test report.
8.1.8 During the test, the temperature of the cooling medium and engine oil shall
comply with the stipulations of 6.3.4.10 and 6.3.4.12 in GB/T 21404-2008.
8.1.9 When the laboratory air intake system is used, the air intake resistance under the
calibrated operating condition shall be within 110% of the upper limit specified by the
manufacturer. When the laboratory exhaust system is used, the difference between
the back pressure under the calibrated operating condition and the upper limit specified
by the manufacturer shall not exceed 1 kPa.
8.1.10 During the test, the fuel temperature shall comply with the stipulations of B.2.7
in GB 20891-2014. The fuel temperature at the inlet of the fuel injection pump shall be
306 K ~ 316 K (33 °C ~ 43 °C), or, comply with the manufacturer’s stipulations.
8.1.11 Adopt the mass method to measure the specific fuel consumption. When using
a manual instrument for measurement, the duration of measurement shall be not less
than 60 s; when using an automatic i...
