Foreword
This document was drafted in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 1.1-2020
Directives for standardization - Part 1: Rules for the structure and drafting of
standardizing documents.
This document replaces GB/T 920-2002 Code for classification and type of highway
pavement. Compared with GB/T 920-2002, except for the structural adjustment and
editorial revisions, the main technical changes are as follows:
a) The terms and definitions, such as “pavement”, “surface course”, “hot mix
asphalt surface course”, “cement concrete surface course”, “surface dressing”,
“penetration macadam surface course”, “block surface course” and “gravel
surface course”, are added (see 3.1~3.8);
b) The classifications of pavement grades and surface course types are changed
(see Chapter 4; see Chapter 3 of the 2002 edition);
c) The code structure is changed (see Chapter 5; see Chapter 4 of the 2002 edition);
d) The code of the pavement grade and the code of the surface course type are
changed (see Chapter 6; see Chapter 5 of the 2002 edition).

This document was proposed by and shall be under the jurisdiction of the National
Technical Committee on Traffic Engineering Facilities (Highway) of Standardization

1 Scope
This document specifies the division principles, coding methods, and codes of highway
pavement grades and surface course types.
This document applies to the processing and exchange of information on highway
pavement grades and surface course types.
2 Normative references
The following documents contain the provisions which, through normative reference in
this document, constitute the essential provisions of this document. For the dated
referenced documents, only the versions with the indicated dates are applicable to this
document; for the undated referenced documents, only the latest version (including all
the amendments) is applicable to this document.

3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1 pavement
It is a layered structure that is made by paving road construction materials on the
roadbed and used for vehicles to drive directly on its surface, and directly bears the load
of vehicles.
3.2 surface course
It is a pavement structural layer that directly bears the vehicle load and the influence of
natural factors, and transmits the load to the roadbed.
3.3 hot mix asphalt surface course
A surface course that is paved with asphalt concrete mixture.
3.4 cement concrete surface course
A surface course that is paved with cement concrete (reinforced or unreinforced).
